ONWA Poetry Night - Strong Hands Stop Violence

This past Sunday ONWA held a very special poetry night in an effort to raise awareness of Violence Against Women in support of the United Nations International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women. My task was to capture the event in photos which included musical guests - Melinda a Melissa Henderson and of course Audra Santa.

My task was to capture the event in photos which included musical guests - Melinda a Melissa Henderson and of course Audra Santa.

Along with the musical performances, elder Al Hunter opened the evening and also contributed a poem of his own. There were also local poets, storytellers and spoken word artists sharing the work too. Even though I was taking photos during the evening, it was very moving to here the stories and poems by local people. It's amazing to see so much talent.

I also had a small Photo Booth set up where I was able to capture some of the attendees. ONWA put on such an amazing event, and I really can't wait until the next event takes place.

This particular session was just as fun as the rest. After setting up my portable studio, the families came in one by one. All the kids were very easy going and always willing to smile for the camera. Well, almost all of the time. Sometimes it took some work.

Thanks to all the families for being such a pleasure to work with.

It's all about family.

With another ONWA photography session this Thursday, I couldn't help but look back at all the photos from the previous three shoots. I decided to pick some of the photos that stood out for me.

With another ONWA photography session this Thursday, I couldn't help but look back at all the photos from the previous three shoots. I decided to pick some of the photos that stood out for me. It was really hard to narrow down as all the families were so fun to photograph. I also chose to showcase them in BW, mainly because I love BW. Please feel free to follow the links below to view the blog writes of the original shoots.

ONWA Family Portraits - Session 3

This past week I was hired to do my third photo session at ONWA. For those that don’t know what ONWA is, I encourage you visit the website to learn more. It is a not for profit organization that was established in 1972 to empower and support Aboriginal women and their families throughout the province of Ontario. I really do like these sessions because it gives me a chance to photograph some wonderful families who might not otherwise hire a photographer to get their portraits done.

The weather was not ideal this time around so I brought my portable studio and set up inside. This created an entirely different feel to the shoot and it was nice to mix it up. All the families were very easy going, and aside from a couple of the younger kids being about shy, I managed to capture some wonderful photos. As a bonus, some of the families were willing to brave the cold so I photographed some families outside. It was a nice overcast day so I took advantage of a brick wall on the side of the building and some natural light. It was almost like a professional model shoot in that most of the kids were really enjoying posing against the wall.

The entire session took about 3 hours and there were about 7 families total. Below are a few shots from each family group. Thanks again to Jessica at ONWA for letting me take part in this. I had a great time as usual!

ONWA Winter Family Portraits - Session 2

The harsh weather let up just in time for my second photography session at ONWA. This time around I had the opportunity to photograph 7 different families. The location for the shoot was in the back area again, except this time around, I took advantage of a nice selection of trees.

The location for the shoot was in the back area again, except this time around, I took advantage of a nice selection of trees. This gave the kids and opportunity to be a bit more natural and do some fun poses. All in all it was fun 2 hours and it was really rewarding to provide portraits for families that might not otherwise get portraits done. Thanks to all the families and of course to Jessica who organized the whole shoot.

ONWA Family Portraits - Session 1

When I was first asked to photograph families for ONWA, I really didn't know what to expect. Mainly because I really didn't fully understand what ONWA was. Once I did a bit of research, I couldn't wait to get in front of all the families and start taking photos. Not only was it for a good cause but I knew it would end up being a lot of fun. Which it was.

All in all there were 12 families. Some were bigger then others and some were simply mom and child. Regardless, they were all very easy going and great in front of the camera. Some of the kids needed to warm up to being in front of the camera, but once they did, the smiles and posing were non stop.

The 3 hours went by extremely quick, and I am already looking forward to the next photo session.
