Hey Rosetta at Crocks

This past Friday, Crocks in Thunder Bay played host to a great Canadian band in Hey Rosetta. Admittedly I did not know much about their music going in but I seeing as how I was taking these photos for The Walleye Magazine, what better time to hear them play.

It was a fantastic concert and it was a very packed house. The crowd was into it from the start, right up until the end. This was my first time photographing a concert at this location but I really like how the photos turned out.

Cinderella - with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra

This past Wednesday I had the pleasure of shooting Cinderella at the Community Auditorium for The Walleye Magazine. Surprisingly this was my first ballet I have ever been to, let alone hired photograph. So suffice it to say I was super excited.

This past Wednesday I had the pleasure of shooting Cinderella at the Community Auditorium for The Walleye Magazine. Surprisingly this was my first ballet I have ever been to, let alone hired photograph. So suffice it to say I was super excited. Going in I didn't really know what to expect which made that much more spontaneous and exciting. I ended up staying for the first act and it was wonderful. There were so many good dancers, and combined with the fantastic orchestra, it was really quite the evening. That's probably why it was pretty much a packed house.

Being limited to the corner of there stage I worried I would struggle getting good enough shots but in the end it wall worked out. As you can see from the pictures below I think I was able to capture some wonderful moments.

My 15 Favourite Photos of 2014

Since it was such a great 2014 for me, I figured the best way to bring in the new year would be to select my favourite photos of this past year. I had such a wide range of clients that it was really hard to pick. There were some great events I was able to photograph, a whole bunch of portrait sessions and of course some truly wonderful weddings.

I had such a wide range of clients that it was really hard to pick. There were some great events I was able to photograph, a whole bunch of portrait sessions and of course some truly wonderful weddings. Looking back it always amazes me just how many wonderful people I met just this past year alone. I simply can't wait for 2015! Be sure to check back often for blog posts and new sessions I have. As always, wedding season is fast approaching, so if you have yet to book a photographer I still have some dates available.

Just Folkin' Around at the Foundry

Recently I have been doing some freelance work for The Walleye which simply an awesome local newspaper in case you haven't heard of it. This time around they asked me to photograph a few local performances at the Foundry this past Friday. The night's event was called Just Folkin' Around.

Recently I have been doing some freelance work for The Walleye which simply an awesome local newspaper in case you haven't heard of it. This time around they asked me to photograph a few local performances at the Foundry this past Friday. The night's event was called Just Folkin' Around.

The first performer was Nick Sherman. This was my first time seeing him and after hearing him sing I would definitely check him out a again. He was then followed by another local artist in Tiina Flank. Her set was just as entertaining. The great thing about her performance is that most of the next band, The Moonshiners, joined her on stage. Once she was done, it was time for the main act which was indeed the Moonshiners. What was great about their set is that they took turns singing which really made for a unique and very energetic night.

I am very much looking forward to photographing another event soon. It's great that Thunder Bay has so much fantastic local talent. Be sure to check out The Foundry to see what events are coming up soon and please do get out there and support out local (and non local) talent.

Here are a few of my favourite photos from the night. They are all in black and white because... well.. concert photographs just look so much better in black and white.

Love of Reading Foundation - Hyde Park School

Today I met a lot of young kids that love to read. They were all from Hyde Park school, it was all part of the Love of Reading Foundation at Chapters here in Thunder Bay. Since 2004 the Love of Reading Foundation has donated more than $17 million to 1600 schools, including Ogden and Sherbrooke public schools in Thunder Bay.  This time around it was Hyde Park school's turn.

All the kids got to choose books they liked which in turn are going to be donated to the school library. The 1.5 hours went be super fast and I can tell all the kids had a blast. Not only were they able to read any book of their choosing but there as also a balloon animal station setup.

I was able to capture a lot of great photos from the event so feel free to take a look below at all the fun the kids had.

Unifor Rally - Thunder Bay

When I was asked to cover the Unifor Rally Event here in Thunder Bay this past Friday I admittedly didn't know too much about it. It was a last minute request so I learned most of what it was about at the rally itself. Going in I knew it was for a good cause but after the event I learned just how important it is to get the word out.

Unifor is Canada's largest private sector union. It's main goal is to make positive changes in communities across the country by creating a strong and effective union. The purpose of this past Friday's rally was to bring awareness and hopefully change to our health care system.

It was a great turnout with a few local news outlets there as well covering the event. I think the whole rally brought a lot of needed attention to this important cause. I was glad to be able to photograph the rally and do my part to bring awareness to this issue.

Dirty Girls Mud Run - 2014

The second annual Dirty Girls Mud Run took place this past weekend and I was lucky enough to be a part of it. This was my first time and it was such a blast. Of course, since I'm a guy, I didn't run the course, but instead I photographed my girlfriend's team - The Sweaty Coconuts.

It was also their first time running the race and what better way to remember such an accomplishment then to document the race through photos. That's where I came in.

It was also their first time running the race and what better way to remember such an accomplishment then to document the race through photos. That's where I came in.

The day started at around 10:00 am. They were supposed to race at 10:40 am but there was a delay of about 1.5 hours. Once they finally took their place at the start line it was my time to capture some of those moments. I was able to immediately follow them to the first couple obstacles, then they were on their own for a while running through mud infested forest. I was told that there were some spots where the mud was up their waste!

So I made my way back to the main area and then walked to the opposite end of the course where more obstacles would eventually take place. I was fortunate to meet another photographer who was a veteran of the event, and he showed me where they would eventually come out.

Low and behold, I eventually saw the five of them at the top of the hill. They soon made there way through a water slide, a bear crawl through mud and then a run to the final few obstacles. These included an even long water slide, a tire climb and lastly, a teeter totter climb. And then the finish line.

All in all, it took them about 2 hours or so. But it wasn't about time, it was about fun, and they had a lot of it. So did I. There is talk of entering a team next year and if they do, I'll be wearing rubber boots next time around so I can get muddier myself.

Thanks to Anne, Cyrene, Cora, Mahogany and Laura for letting me follow them around in the mud for a couple hours!
