CDVMP Ground Blessing & Announcement Ceremonies

Lakehead University in partnership with University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College hosted a milestone event yesterday that I was so happy to be a part of. It was the Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program ground breaking ceremony.

“A ground blessing ceremony led by Elder Gene Nowegejick and attended by university leadership, donors, and government partners on Lakehead's Thunder Bay campus signalled the ceremonial start of construction for a new animal education facility that will open in 2027. The event celebrated the newly confirmed Indigenous name for the future facility: Gakina Awesiinyag, from the Anishinaabemowin language, translating to All Animals (Place For).”

“Thunder Bay Art Gallery is thrilled to present a new solo exhibition by acclaimed First Nations artist Edward Poitras. In 1983 Poitras created Big Iron Sky, a monumental work comprising four ornamented horse skulls levitating on wooden beams. This major work in the gallery’s permanent collection calls into consciousness the arrival of horses on the prairies and Plains Cree legends foretelling forces of change.”

One of the recent exhibits I photographed for the Thunder Bay Art Gallery was Hometown Anthems by Laura-Lynn Petrick.

“Hometown Anthems is the debut exhibition in Thunder Bay by Laura-Lynn Petrick . Growing up in Lappe, a rural township outside of Thunder Bay, Petrick began documenting her life on analog film as a teen. Dating back to 2007, a selection of Petrick’s images spans her experiences growing up in a small town to the present day, including never-before-seen images from her archive. From candid portraits to light-strewn landscapes, Hometown Anthems reads as a new ballad of Northern Ontario.”
