ONWA Family Fun Day 2022

ONWA once again put on a Family Fun Day. The turnout was amazing and there were so many moments I was able to capture. It was great to see so many smiling faces. :)

5th Annual Nokiiwin Tribal Council Unity Gathering

I had the pleasure of photographing a small portion of the 5th Annual Nokiiwin Tribal Council Unity Gathering that took place on Mount McKay earlier this month. The highlight was definitely the powwow, which saw a host of different drum groups and dancers.

The entire event was spanned 5 days and included a wide range of events.

Urban Youth Hide Tanning Camp - Thunder Bay Marina

This week there was a great free community program taking place at the Thunder Bay Marina. It was the Urban Youth Hide Tanning Camp. It encouraged the younger generation to come out and learn how to work with moose hides. My wife and I brought her mom and sister for a couple days and they provided additional wisdom to the organizers which was a great site to see.

Overall, it was very rewarding to document some of the event, and also learn about the process myself.

WineOh! 2022 - Thunder Bay Marina

This past weekend saw an amazing event called WineOh! take place at the Thunder Bay Marina. There were a wide variety of local vendors showcasing some fantastic wines, all in one of the nicest venues in the city.

There was an afternoon session and an evening session. My wife and I went to both, and I was hired to capture a few photos of the event. We made sure to taste a nice array of wines and quickly decided which our favourites were.

Hopefully the same event takes place next year. It was a lot of fun walking around and enjoying the people and refreshing drinks.

Definitely Superior Art Gallery - La Francophonie Gala Opening

Here are some highlights from yet another wonderful art exhibit put on by Definitely Superior Art Gallery.

Giinawind Co. 13 Moons Exhibit Opening

This past Thursday Giinawind hosted their opening of the 13 Moons Exhibit on June 1st, 2022 to bring in and celebrate National Indigenous History Month. 

The exhibit included 13 Ribbon Skirts and 13 Ribbon Skirts representing each moon. It was created by various artists.

It was such a fun and beautiful event to photograph. There was so much amazing talent on display.

2Wheels 4Realz Safe Cycling Program - EcoSuperior

I recently had the opportunity to photograph safe cycling skills with students at École Elsie MacGill Public School which was put on by EcoSuperior.

Safe Cycling Thunder Bay and WOW TBay offer school cycling programs to give students the knowledge to ride their bikes safely and enjoy their journey to and from school.

Gathering of the People Pow Wow

This past weekend me and my family made it out to Boulevard Lake where the Gathering of the People Pow Wow was taking place. It was the last day of the event, but we got to spend just over an hour watching some amazing dancers and drum groups perform.

Not only did I capture photos of the dancing, I tried to also get photos the people in attendance too. Overall it was a very fun and rewarding day. I look forward to hopefully many more Pow Wow’s over the course of the summer.

EcoSuperior - Stash the Trash Event

It was another great event put on by EcoSuperior and hosted by Sleeping Giant Brewery Co. A group of volunteers went out into the city to help make our areas cleaner and to also raise awareness. It was a very rainy day, but that didn’t hold anyone back.

Afterwards everyone gathered at Sleeping Giant Brewery Co. for some drinks and pizza supplied by Eat Local Pizza. Be sure to check out the EcoSuperior website to see when the next event takes place, so you can be a part of it!

EcoSuperior - Spring Up to Clean Up

I had a great time photographing the Spring Up to Clean Up event, down at City Hall, hosted by EcoSuperior. It’s an event that helps keep our city clean, green, and beautiful! It was amazing to see all the volunteers come out to the launch event, but also sad to see to all the litter on the streets and back alleys. Hopefully this will help bring awareness to the situation, and of course, get people out to clean everything up!

DEFSUP LU Retro Graduate Redux

I had the pleasure of getting out to photograph the The Lakehead University RetroGraduate Exhibition last weekend. It is an exhibition comprised of artwork that the Major Studio Graduates of both 2021+2022 have created/selected over a four year period of their program, including new works.

I was blown away by the immense talent on display at the show. There were even some interactive pieces which were very cool. The show is still going on until June 4th, so if you live in Thunder Bay, be sure to stop by and check it out!

Craft Revival Spring 2022

One of my favourite events of the year took place this afternoon, The Craft Revival. It actually takes place twice a year, and this was the spring edition. Even though it doesn’t really feel like spring is here with all the snow we have been getting. Regardless, the weather did hold up and it ended up being the perfect day to walk around all the venues downtown.

I’m always amazed at how many talented artists there in this city. It seems like each year this event happens I see a local artist I never saw before. I’m so happy I was available to attend this year and capture just a small portion the event!
