An Evening of Music on the Waterfront

Last week was the first time this year that we made it to the Live on the Waterfront event that happens every Wednesday during the summer. I decided to go again this past Wednesday and I took my mother in law and her sister with me. After we set up our seats I started walking around. I of course photographed the last two performers of the night which were great. They were Nêhiyawak and Jeremy Dutcher. I was disappointed that I missed Robin Ranger but we arrived a little too late. I have been shooting pretty much everything with the Canon EOS R which I absolutely love but this time around I decided to just use my original Canon 5D Classic.

There is just something about that camera that makes me want to keep shooting with it. It’s over 13 years old, little to know dynamic range and a very low megapixel count according to today’s standard. Who cares. It doesn’t effect me at all. It’s a joy to use and as long as you know what you are doing, you can create good photos with any camera you have. Along with the music, I also took the time to walk around the Marina and do some personal photography. I haven’t had a chance to do so in what seems like forever. It felt really good. I had no theme in mind, just capturing what ever caught me eye.

Thanks for stopping by!

Dizzy Mystics as Tool @ Crocks Thunder Bay

Living in a smaller town like Thunder Bay means that a band like Tool will never make their way here. That doesn’t mean that it’s not possible to listen to one of my favourite bands. Enter Dizzy Mystics who stopped by Crocks Thunder Bay last night to do a 3 set performance. Admittedly I had never heard of Dizzy Mystics but they were covering Tool for one of their sets so I was all in regardless. They also did some original music and a Soundgarden performance as well, which I unfortunately didn’t stay for.

I really didn’t know what to expect but I was blown away by how awesome they sounded. I have only see Tool live once before, and that was a long long time ago. All I can say is that if Dizzy Mystics ever roll through your city and they are covering Tool (or any band for that matter), definitely check them out. Lead singer Kyle Halldorson held his own and then some compared to Maynard James Keenan, and that is no easy feat. Every single song they performed sounded amazing. It also helped that Crocks had some really good sound going on as well.

Rounding out the band are Jeff Laird (Drums), Alexandre Joyal (Guitar) and Aaron Bacon (Bass), who were equally outstanding. I am by no means a concert reviewer, but I did want to take a moment to share my thoughts and experience and of course some photos.

For anyone looking to find out more about Dizzy Mystics, head on over to their Facebook Page.

Bluesfest 2017

All the years that I have lived in Thunder Bay, I never once made it to a single Bluesfest, which all changed this past year. I was hired to cover a few hours of the event so I had no excuse this time around. The day that I chose to go, of course it rained for the first part. But that didn't mean I stopped shooting. Luckily, I was able to come back later in the evening and a lot more photos.

Admittedly, I didn't really worry about photographing the actual bands. Don't get me wrong, I captured a few here and there but honestly, it was just wasn't worth it for me. They were really strict about stopping and taking photos and I didn't have backstage access, so getting in close wasn't really an option, unless I felt like renting a huge zoom lens.

Instead, I do what I do best, I captured the people and moments within the crowd. I do it for wedding and portraits and my street photography, and this time it was no different. Next year, I will see if I can get in a bit closer but I'm so happy with all of the photos I managed to get with my lenses on hand.
