Laura + Family Portraits - Tree Farm

It was a little chilly, the rain was starting to come down, but that didn’t stop Laura and her family from pushing through the session at the Tree Farm this past weekend! I’m so glad they did, as the photos turned out amazing. I love shooting extended family sessions like this one.

It was such a relaxed and fun atmosphere, and because it was a larger family session, we just stayed in one area of the forest and got it done there. Sometimes, that’s all you need to do.

Laura + Georgia Family Portraits - Trow Bridge Falls

My first of two portrait sessions of the day was with my recent contest winner, Laura, and her daughter Georgia. Last week I did a Facebook promotion giving away a free 1 hour portrait package. I still can’t believe the response I got for the contest and in the end, Laura and her daughter were randomly drawn. I really lucked out too because they were so much fun to photograph.

I still can’t believe the response I got for the contest and in the end, Laura and her daughter were randomly drawn. I really lucked out too because they were so much fun to photograph.

I recommended Trow Bridge Falls as the location because I thought it would be the perfect winter location, with the rapids still running and a bit of snow on the ground. Laura mentioned that the last time she was there was when she was a teenager. So it had be a long time! Her daughter Georgia was just a ball of energy. She was laughing and running pretty much the whole session. I am completely used to running around chasing kids during sessions, so it was nothing new for me, and plus, I enjoy it so much.

I made the mistake of mentioning a small playground I wanted to check out at the end of the session. Georgia kept asking to go to while were taking photos. Lesson learned I guess. Trow Bridge has a lot of great spots and we started in the playground itself where Georgia was immediately climbing the monkey bars and eventually the slide. She even got her mom up on the monkey bars too. These types of sessions are my favourite because it is just me capturing moments.

With that being said, I still wanted to get some ‘posed’ photos here and there. We made our way to the trail across the bridge and eventually down to the water. It didn’t take very long for Georgia to be comfortable with me too. It got to the point where she was coming up with names to call me. Some of them were quite creative. Of course, I had to give it back a little, which only made her want to do it more. She also went through a snorting phase where she sounded like a little pig for about 10 minutes. The smiles and natural expressions that came from those moments was priceless though.

Before we ended the session I made sure to quickly take Laura and Georgia to the small playground I mentioned. I think Georgia was expecting something a bit different but she still had some fun trying to climb up the slide. The last few photos I took were just along the tree line near the parking lot and one of my favourite photos from the session was actually the very last one I took. Laura was carrying Georgia up the hill and I got them to stop for a split second and got a great candid portrait of the two of them. It goes to show you, don’t ever stop shooting until the session is completely over.

A huge thank you to Laura and her daughter for letting me spend an amazing hour with them!

Laura + Beau Wedding

Most of the time I have long wedding days, anywhere between 7 to 10 hours. Those usually allow a lot of time to capture a ton of moments and great photos. Well, my recent wedding with Laura and Beau had me photographing them for only 2 hours. The challenge with short wedding days like theirs, is that I really have to make sure I'm on my game to get a lot of quality photos in such a short amount of time.

Well, my recent wedding with Laura and Beau had me photographing them for only 2 hours. The challenge with short wedding days like theirs, is that I really have to make sure I'm on my game to get a lot of quality photos in such a short amount of time.

Luckily for me, Laura and Beau were a blast to photograph and there were plenty of moments during my short time with them. I arrived in the afternoon, and as soon as I got there, the ceremony was just about to begin. It was perfect timing. I was already ready to go so I immediately started taking candid of guests and eventually Laura walking down the aisle. The ceremony was short and sweet and small. It took place in Beau's Sisters' backyard which was very pretty.

Once the ceremony was done, we pretty much immediately headed down the street to the tree farm. I have done a few portrait sessions there, and even an engagement or two, but never wedding portraits. I only had 30 minutes to work with but I was super excited to spend that time photographing Laura and Beau at such a beautiful location. Suffice it to say, we came away with some epic portraits. It helped that they were both so natural behind the camera.

I then took the afternoon off, and returned to capture just a little bit of the reception and first dances. Out of all the weddings I have attended, Laura and Beau's probably had the most kids. I loved its, since I adore taking photos of children. I got so many great candid photos of kids interacting with the rest of the guests and each other.

Everyone then gathered around in a circle, lit their sparklers and watched as the happy couple did their first dance. It was quite the scene, and the sparklers were a nice touch. After the dances with their respective parents, it was time for the rest of the guests to let loose. It was then time for me to go.

As I mentioned above, I was only there for a couple hours total, but it felt like much longer because I got so many special photos. Laura and Beau were the perfect couple and I can just tell that they are going to continue to make each extremely happy!

A short slideshow highlighting some of my favourite moments from Laura and Beau's Wedding Day.

Laura + Family Portraits

Even though winter is here to stay, I managed to get squeeze in a family session with Laura and her family just before the snowfall and before it got too cold. Because the weather was cooperating, we started the session outside in their backyard as well as the side alley. When possible, I always try and get as many outdoor portraits as possible, but we also decided to get some indoor one as well, especially since Laura and her family had such a beautiful home.

Not only did I capture some great moments with the whole family, I also came away with some really good individual photos of Laura. The session went by so fast, but the resulting photos turned out better then I ever could have imagined. It helped that I had the perfect family to work with!
