I had the pleasure of capturing the recent RetroGraduate X2 Exhibition at Definitely Superior Art Gallery this past weekend. It was comprised of artworks from the Major Studio Graduates of 2019 and 2020 from a four year period of their program. A wide range of works including paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculptures and multimedia were on display. There were also two different DJ’s spinning unique mixes, fresh food provided by Red Lion Smokehouse and coffee by St. Paul Roastery!

It was such an amazing event, and I was so glad to be a part of it.

Head Safety Awareness - Lakehead University

Last week I was asked to photograph a portion of the Head Safety Awareness event at Lakehead University. Scouts Canada and Hydro One put on the event to help families become aware of head injuries and how to prevent them.

Last week I was asked to photograph a portion of the Head Safety Awareness event at Lakehead University. Scouts Canada and Hydro One put on the event to help families become aware of head injuries and how to prevent them.

Children aged 5 to 12 were invited to take part and learn about head injury prevention, head related first aid awareness and concussion simulation. The community event was open to everyone, not just Scouts Canada members.

KAIROS Blanket Exercise - Lakehead University

Last year I photographed the second largest blanket exercise in North America at Lakehead University. This one was a much smaller one but the impact and importance was just as big. The KAIROS Blanket Exercise took place in the main lobby of Lakehead University, and it was a really good turnout.

The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is a teaching tool that uses participatory education to raise awareness of the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada using blankets to represent land. There are more of these exercises happening throughout the year so I encourage anyone who has never been to go to one.

31st Annual LUNSA Powwow - Lakehead University

Thunder Bay is a very diverse city, and that was on full display this past weekend as Lakehead University Native Student Association played host to the 31st Annual LUNSA Powwow. It was a 3 day event with warmups taking place on the Friday and the rest of the celebration happening on the Saturday and Sunday. There were 3 grand entries over the course of the weekend, a feast on Saturday, a wide range of drum groups from across the province and of course lots of dancing and singing.

After photographing it last year I knew I had to do it again this year because it is such an amazing atmosphere. With my wife being aboriginal, I have been lucky enough to be a part of the that culture for the last 10 years. Not only did I come away with a ton of great photos, I also created a short highlight video of some of the celebration below. I’m already looking forward to next years event. Luckily, there are many more powwows throughout the rest of the spring and summer so I’ll be sure to get out and check out some of them. Check out some of the highlights below!

Health Quality Transformation - Quality Matters 2018 Seminar

With wedding season pretty much over for me, aside from a New Years one (which I’m super excited for), I tend to do a variety of events. One of my latest events was the Health Quality Transformation - Quality Matters 2018 seminar at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Along with Thunder Bay, It’s Canada’s largest conference on health care quality. Along with Thunder Bay, Toronto, London, Ottawa and Sudbury all took part as well.

Along with Thunder Bay, It’s Canada’s largest conference on health care quality. Along with Thunder Bay, Toronto, London, Ottawa and Sudbury all took part as well.

It was a one day conference that focused on putting quality into action. The main guest speakers for the conference was Jeffrey Braithwaite and Tanya Talaga. Jeffrey is the Professor and Foundation Director at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation and Tanya is the Author of Seven Fallen Feathers and a Toronto Star Journalist.

My task was to simply document the day which I had a great time doing. Everyone was very laid back and just trying to take in all the information they could. That is also something I was able to do while photographing the event. If you would like to learn more about Health Quality Transformation head on over to their website here.

This past Saturday I photographed I very prestigious event at Lakehead University in which Chancellor Lyn McLeod officially bestowed Dr. Moira McPherson President and Vice President. I couldn’t believe how many people where there in support of her. Not just honoured guests but colleagues as well.

Also at the event, the Chancellor presented Ron MacLean with an honorary degree for his work on television and various sporting events throughout the years. It was a pleasure photographing him and also meeting him in person for the first the time.

If you would like to find out a bit more about this special event, head on over to the Lakehead University article on their website here.

30th Annual LUNSA Powwow

I got asked to cover some of this weekends LUNSA Powwow and the Lakehead University Fieldhouse. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the event and I was honoured to photograph it. Surprisingly I had never been to the LUNSA Powwow, but I have photographed other ones throughout the city. So, I was amazed at just how many dancers and people attended. As I photographer, it's a dream event to photograph with all the colours and people and energy.

As I photographer, it's a dream event to photograph with all the colours and people and energy.

For an event of this nature, it's almost all candid photography with a few posed shots mixed in. I also made sure to get in close on some of the details. Each and every dancer had such amazing attire, I had to slow myself down sometimes and really take it all in. Even the children were dressed up and having a great time too. The whole evening had such an electric atmosphere, with the drums beating loud, it was hard not to come away with some great photos.

I'm very much looking forward to more Powwows throughout the year!
